Vintage Design
This exquisite tall cabinet dates back to the Shanxi province of 1880, and although key sections have been gently worn by time, its original black lacquer finish remains to a large extent. Its square-cornered design with thick frames and flush sides create a tasteful silhouette, complemented by the intricate symmetrical pattern of its carved apron, which intricately depicts scrolling dragons. Within, two shelves can be removed with ease. This cabinet, with its classic yet contemporary design and dark lustrous hue, is sure to complement any interior style, serving as an elegant statement piece and providing ample storage capacity.
Unusually, the doors of this cabinet feature their original circular brass hardware and handles, a rarity due to the iron smelting of China’s ‘Great Leap Forward.’ Its Shanxi craftsmanship was better preserved during this period, being isolated by mountains and with a copious supply of coal for fuel. Thus, this fine example of a large elm cabinet with a carved apron is especially well-preserved and authentic.
