Vintage Design
Rare vintage Mies van der Rohe “MR 20” cantilevered cane and steel arm chair made by Stendig circa 1970. The MR chair was designed by modernist architect Mies van der Rohe in 1927 as part of his contribution to the Weissenhof exhibit in Stuttgart, Germany and was awarded the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1977 and the Design Center Stuttgart Award in 1978. This iconic Bauhaus cantilever chair feature clean lines, a simple profile and a lack of ornamentation that epitomizes the International Style. The chair’s cantilevered design used chrome-plated tubular steel – an innovative technology at the time – paired with handwoven natural cane for the perfect balance of contrasting materials and an intuitively accessible and ergonomic seat.
